Elaine Kryzanowski

Jean Elaine Kryzanowski, 83, of Atikokan, made a peaceful transition out of this world on January 11, 2012.

Elaine was born on August 20, 1928 to A. Deane and Alice Mallory in Fort Frances, Ontario. An accomplished figure skater, Elaine married an NHL player, the late Edward Lloyd Kryzanowski, on June 18, 1949. The couple lived in Boston, Hershey, Pennsylvania, Warroad, Minnesota, and Colorado Springs, raising three children, Mallory Burton (now of Prince Rupert, BC), Patti Kryzanowski (Colorado Springs), and Kris Kryzanowski (Laura) of Pine Junction, Colorado. In Minnesota, Elaine taught figure skating. In Colorado, Elaine was a member of the Broadmoor Curling Club, enjoyed watching Olympic skaters training, took a series of art lessons and worked in a firm that supplied electronics for the Apollo moon missions.

Retiring in 1979, Elaine and Ed returned to Canada, settling first at Seine River before moving to Atikokan in 1995. Inspired by her wilderness surroundings on the Seine, Elaine had time to develop a lifelong interest in painting. Elaine attended and taught art classes, conducted art shows and won several prizes at juried art shows in the Rainy River region. Grandchildren Anthony Voitik (Louise), Jamal Allen (Jami), Erik Allen, and Jaryl Mack have fond memories of summer visits to the Seine, picking blueberries, swimming, fishing, and enjoying Gramma Laine’s many stories and her sense of humour. A love of nature will certainly be passed to Elaine’s two great grandchildren, Alexa and Houston.

Elaine is survived by sister Harriett Morphet of Atikokan and was predeceased by her husband, parents, sisters Geraldeane, Lenore, Vivian and brothers Douglas and Arleigh. At Elaine’s request, no service will be conducted and she will be interred in the Mallory family plot in Fort Frances at a later date. Her family thanks Elaine’s friends, doctors, nurses, and home care workers who have provided such excellent care and support this past year. If friends so desire, donations can be made to the non-profit Pictograph Art Gallery (Box 1919, Atikokan ON P0T1C0) or the Atikokan General Hospital, (120 Dorothy St., Atikokan ON P0T1C0).

Doris Danielson

Doris Danielson passed away peacefully on Christmas morning, 2011.

She was born on the family farm April 5, 1927 to Ed and Mabel Saville. She went to school in Pine Grove and later, in Dryden. After World War II, she married George Danielson of Eagle River. For a time they ran the Sanford Poultry Farm then they moved to Atikokan where George was employed by Steep Rock Iron Mines. They retired to a farm on the Rainy River near Devlin. Doris returned to Dryden after George passed away.

Doris excelled at being a mother, grandmother and homemaker. Her children and grandchildren consider themselves blessed by her gentle, sweet spirit and loving kindness. Besides love, her household was wrapped in yarn. Doris could knit anything perfectly even if she had only a description or rough sketch to work from. In fact she knitted the sweater she wore when she started school! Over the years she sewed clothes for her friends and family. At university her daughter was asked by students with an eye for European fashion, which couturier house had made her wardrobe. They were amazed that it was the ‘House of Mom’.

Like her father before her, Doris loved to walk, putting in at least three miles a day. She also loved to dance, especially the Jitterbug, winning local contests.

Doris’ passing seems like the passing of an era for the Saville family. She was the youngest child of Ed and Mabel Saville who came, after World War I, from Southern Ontario to pioneer a homestead farm at Eton Rugby.

Doris is predeceased by her husband, her parents and eight sisters and five brothers. Her son-in-law Rick Greaves and grandson Sean Greaves also predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters: Joan Fossey (and son-in-law Steve Fossey) of Vermilion Bay and Debbie Greaves of Dryden; four grandchildren: Jen Greaves of Dryden, Sean Fossey of Dryden, Symantha DeRoos of Acton and Chris Greaves of Winnipeg. There are also ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life was held December 29 in the Moffat Chapel of Stevens Funeral Homes. Interment will follow in the Box Alder Cem

etery in Devlin where a graveside service will be held in the spring of 2012. If friends desire donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be emailed to sympathycard@shaw.ca subject: Danielson

Danny Lee Veran

Alfred and Marie Veran and family sorrowfully announce the unexpected passing of their youngest and much loved son Danny Lee Veran, on December 15, 2011 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Dan was born February 20, 1971 in Atikokan, Ontario. He spent his early life in Atikokan and Bear Pass. He had a passion for hockey and also liked to hunt, fish, and go snowmachining. After high school he attended Confederation College where he took a welding course. He worked in the construction industry as a welder, mechanic and crusher operator.

Dan is survived by his Mom and Dad, niece Taylor, sister-in-law Cindy. He is also survived by maternal aunts and uncles, Lorraine Calder and Joe Duhamel and family, LaVerne and Bill Caul and family, Roberta and Randy Kehl and family and Dorothy and Don Huitikka and family. Paternal aunts and uncles, Delores Veran and family, Sandra Sedor and family, Alverne Dickson and family, Sharon Veran and family, Joe Veran, Jack and Evelyn Veran and family, Beverly Veran and Family.

Dan was predeceased by his older brothers Robert and Patrick, uncle Ray Veran, cousins Steve Huitikka, Lonny Goodman, Mark Goodman, Ricky Goodman and Rachel Hanson, and maternal grandparents Bob and Maude Calder and paternal grandparents Alfred and Mary Veran.

A gathering to remember Dan will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Atikokan Branch (115 O’Brien St. Atikokan) on January 7, 2012 from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Treat everyone with kindness

Smile when you think of Dan.

In her younger years Mary Anne was employed at Bell Canada as an operator then once she married her husband Ed, she became a full time homemaker, devoting her energies to providing a loving home for her two sons and husband. Mary Anne and Ed moved from Fort Frances to Thunder Bay in 1981.

Upon Ed’s retirement, in 1988, they moved to Atikokan. Mary Anne worked for many years at the While Otter Motel and since the inception of the family business, Dutka Signs in 1990, she worked as the office manager until her unexpected passing.

Mary Anne was predeceased by her mother in1978, her father in 1990, her brother Romeo in1982, brother-in-law Bill Zdep in 2010 and sister-in-law Betty (Dutka) Main. She will be forever missed by her loving husband, Ed, of 56 years; her sons, Dale (Donna) granddaughter Abbygail of Thunder Bay, and son Alan of Atikokan. She is also survived by her brother James (Sylvia) Delaurier of Prince George, BC., and sister Diane of Airdrie, Alberta and brother-in-law Bill (Gayle) Dutka of Atikokan. She also survived by numerous nieces: Michelle, Nadine, Janice, Lorie, Terry Ann and Tracee; nephews: Rick, Glenn, Barry, Tony, Teddy and their families.

While living in Fort Frances, Mary Anne was a longstanding member of Redwing Rebekah Lodge No. 109. Mary Anne enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as gardening, sewing, knitting and baking. She especially enjoyed her only granddaughter, Abby. Mary Anne also enjoyed visiting with family and friends and always loved a good cup of tea. Her greatest pride and joy was her family.

Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held in the future.

The family would like to express their utmost thanks to the kind and compassionate nursing staff of Atikokan General Hospital, especially Dr. Spencer who cared for Mom in her final days.

With heavy hearts, the family of John Rees, 37, announces his passing on October 5, 2011, as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Meath Park, Saskatchewan. He was born September 12, 1974.

John was a Twin Otter captain for Kenn Borek Air of Calgary. He embraced the challenging work of flying in the Arctic and Antarctic and loved every minute of the 15 years he spent working as a commercial pilot. John’s greatest joys in life were being Dad, making new friends, flying to new places, hunting and fishing. He excelled at everything he did. His friends spoke of his kindness, integrity and sense of humour. His former flight instructors, employers and co-pilots spoke of his uncanny, natural ability to fly.

At eighteen, John said: “I don’t want to be one of those people who lives a life of ‘quiet desperation’.” He found his niche in life and lived it to the fullest. He was born to fly!

John is survived by his parents Alan and Barbara (Booker) Rees of Fredericton, NB, twin sister Victoria Rees and neice Grace of Baileyville, ME, six-year-old son Kye of Air Ronge, SK, sixteen-year-old daughter Sydney Rowinski of Fredericton, many cousins, aunts and uncles, including ‘special’ uncle Don Booker of Fredericton and, a plethora of friends from the international aviation community.

A memorial service was held at York Funeral Home in Fredericton, NB on Saturday October 22. Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation in memory of John to the Make-A-Wish Foundation Canada (521-4211 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M2P 2A9. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
