The handi-van replacement fund is about $4,400 richer today, thanks to some shoe leather invested by 27 walkers, and the generous donors who supported them in Atikokan’s first indoor walk-a-thon.
“I had talked to Paula Sanders about walk-a-thons, and mentioned it was hard to pick a time for one as there are already two big ones a year in Atikokan,” said organizer Marg Shields. “She had the idea of an indoor one, and so I brought the idea to the committee and went from there.”
The walkers took to the halls of AHS on January 26, with the permission of the school, and the support of the regular hall walkers’ group organized by the ANFC and the health unit.
It wasn’t without its trials for the organizers – a week or so before the event everyone realized the day they had picked was the change of semester PD day at the school, but in the end that was not an issue.
Dr. Ken Sawchuk provided some prizes for the walkers, and the handi-van replacement fund committee provided water and cookies.
Top pledge earner was committee member Doreen Mercer; the youngest was Riley Bimm (actually, her one-year old ‘niece’ Andie Langner also participated, but most of her walking was courtesy of mom, Kristi). The senior walker was Madge Prokopchuk.
The committee is pleased and delighted with the response. “We are overwhelmed and thank the community,” said Shields.
