William James ‘Jim’ Chambers

William James ‘Jim’ Chambers, 95, of 133 Elm Crescent, Atikokan, Ontario passed away peacefully with his family at his side at home on Sunday, August 1, 2010.

He was born on January 23, 1915 in Maryfield, Saskatchewan to the late Fredrick and Violet Chambers. During the war, Jim enlisted in the army and served his country overseas. At the end of the war he returned to Canada and moved to the Rainy River District. On November 12, 1935, Jim was united in marriage with the Grace Isabella Parker. Over the years, they raised their three children, Don, Laila and Darrell. Jim worked as an underground miner at the mine in Atikokan for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the Riverview United Church in Atikokan; and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Jim was a kind, gentle man and very well liked by everyone, and he will be missed dearly by family and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Grace Chambers in 2003, as well as sister, Dorothy ‘Dixie’ Roy and sister-in-law Gladys Chambers.

Jim is survived by his children, Don (Yvonne) Chambers of Fort Frances, Ontario, Laila (Leo) Goranson of McCauley Lake, Ontario, and Darrell (Liz) Chambers of Atikokan, eleven grandchildren; and many great and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Dave (Louise) Chambers of Fort Frances, and Bruce Chambers of B.C., sister Lorraine Hatch of B.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services celebrating Jim’s life were held Thursday, August 5, at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 145 in Atikokan, with Reverend Brad Ricci officiating. Interment is in Little Falls Cemetery in Atikokan.   The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 145 Color Guard provided a tribute at the service. Active pallbearers will be Leonard Goranson, Evan Collins, Jim Anness, Rick Guerts, Rick Chambers and Dale Chambers.
