Her warm and caring heart will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

My sister’s in a better place, a place that we all know,

A place we all have heard about, and some say we will go.

No paths or roads to take us there, a place of perfect peace,

A place where hearts are free of pain, a place we’ll meet again.

This I believe. ‘Til then she lives in the hearts of those she touched and left behind.

Lillian ‘Lums’ Bruyere

Lillian Viola ‘Lums’ Bruyere, 80, passed away Friday, June 25, 2010, at the Atikokan General Hospital Extended Care Wing with her family by her side.

Lillian was born September 23, 1929, in Fort Frances, the second child (of nine) of George and Mabel Calder. In 1947 she and Thoedore Bruyere, also of Fort Frances, were united in marriage. Theodore went to work with J.A. Mathieu Lumber, and the couple lived at both Sapawe and Camp 113, where they raised six children.

In 1965, they moved right into Atikokan. As the children got older (the last was born in 1959), Lillian got more involved in work and community life. In 1974, Theodore passed away. Lillian worked as a cab driver, school bus driver, Shop Easy delivery person, and tree planting crew boss. But she was probably most famous for her cooking (a job she originally felt she wasn’t qualified for!), and she cooked at Tip Top Lodge, Ontario Hydro, Armstrong’s bush camps and the West Fort Hotel. She continued to cook as a volunteer after retiring; her wild rice soup was an Atikokan favourite.

Lums was a mother figure or aunt to many besides her own; her house was known as a refuge, and was always full. She was a bingo fan, and a great supporter of the Atikokan Native Friendship Centre. Her home even served as the ANFC facility for a while during its early days, when Lillian was working in the bush.

She was always willing to help, particularly with seniors, and was especially known for her willingness to provide a ride to wherever was needed.

Lillian is survived by her six children, Louis ‘Smokey’ (Virginia) of Fort Frances, Lawrence ‘Ike’ (Carol) of Edson, Alberta, Peter (Faye) of Fort Frances, Wendy (E.J. Joudain) of Fort Frances, Roberta of Atikokan and Albert of Thunder Bay, 15 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Dempsey (Barb), Doug (Dixie) and Georgina, all of Fort Frances, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lillian was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Theodore, sisters Gloria May Calder, Vivian ‘Pud’ Pepin and Norma Fults, and brother Norman Calder.

A graveside remembrance was held at Little Falls Cemetery, Atikokan, on Wednesday, June 30, followed by a gathering at the Atikokan Legion Hall. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the AGH Extended Care Wing, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated by the family.

Sharon Desaulniers

Sharon Marie Desaulniers (April 26, 1945 – June 30, 2010) is now in peace after a brief illness. She is lovingly remembered by her beloved husband of 48 years, Douglas Desaulniers and her children Todd (Tammy), Tina (Rob), Douglas (Rosellen), Terry (Bobbi) and her grandchildren Cassie, Christopher, Tanner, Paris, Nathan and Ashton. She is also lovingly remembered by her brothers Lloyd (Ann) and Lesley (Dianne) Sinclair. She was predeceased by her beloved Son Ricky, Sister Sandy, as well as her parents Gordon and Audrey Sinclair.

Her passion was the love for her family, especially her grandchildren. She was born in Fort Frances, April 26, 1945 and attended Robert Moore School. She met the love of her life Douglas whom she married and then resided in Atikokan where they raised a beautiful loving family. Sharon ran the Atikokan arena & baseball canteens for many years, but it was the Coffee Cup where she created good home cooked meals that really became her passion. She was a definite sparkle in the community. Sharon loved spending time out at her family camp at Perch Lake. Lots of laughter with family and watching her grandchildren swim and have fun brought tremendous joy to Sharon. Sharon will be missed and loved forever.

A funeral mass was held at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday, July 3, with Fr. Theodore Nnorom officiating. Pallbearers were Tina Shubaly and Cassie Desaulniers, with grandchildren Christopher, Tanner, Paris, Nathan and Ashton serving as honourary pallbearers.
