Atikokan’s Atom Voyageurs won the Elks’ Tom Thumb Tournament in Thunder Bay, March 26-28.
The Vs dropped their first game, 2-1, in a shootout to the KC Devils from Thunder Bay, then reeled off four straight wins to take the title. The run of wins included three consecutive one-goal victories over Elks teams from the city.
The comeback started with a 5-2 win over the Gillons’ Sharks from Fort Frances; Cole Krasseya nd Kyler Gannon each scored twice in that win. From there, things got a lot tougher, as the way the tourney’s complex seeding system worked, the Vs ended up playing three of the four host Elks teams. (There were 16 teams overall, and each was guaranteed four games.)
The Vs bested the BEAR Kings 5-4, as Krassey scored a hat trick and Parker Sampson added a goal and two assists. Next, it was the Elks Power Skating Flyers, and the result was the same, 5-4 Atikokan. Cole Krassey had a goal and two assists, and Kyler Gannon had a pair of goals in that one.
That win put them up against the undefeated Elks Dufresne Stars, who were 4-0 coming in and had outscored their opponents 31-1. The game was a superb defensive contest, and the Vs generated enough offense to win 2-1, on goals by Parker Sampson and Eric Williams (Sampson with the assist).
Cole Krassey led the team in scoring (7 goals, 3 assists), with Parker Sampson (3, 4), Kyler Gannon (5-1), Eric Williams (2,1), Andrew Squires (1, 0) and Shawnte Anderson (0,1) chipping in. Fayth Chambers and Cameron Ivall shared goaltending duties; Hunter Zacharias, Aiden Labossiere, Alexis Paquette, Nathan Desaulniers, Hannah Hayes, Elias Chambers and Jackson Geurts rounded out the line-up.
